Smile makeovers, veneers and crowns: honest distinctions for UK patients
A smile makeover is a plan, not a product. Whether it involves veneers, crowns, whitening, bonding or a mix depends on the condition of your teeth and on how little tooth removal is needed to get there.
E.max veneers from £250 and Pearly White zirconia crowns from £170 per tooth (see our price list); the Pearly White Smile Makeover Package from £3,200 including seven nights’ accommodation and transfers, with Diamond White from £4,000 and E.max crown or veneer packages from £5,000 (see our packages).
Veneers are thin facings bonded to the front of teeth and need little tooth reduction; they suit front teeth that are basically healthy. Crowns cover the whole tooth and require more reduction; they suit teeth that are broken, heavily filled or root-treated. Crowns are not veneers. A responsible clinician recommends the least invasive option that achieves your goal, and tells you when whitening or bonding would do the job.
Veneers or crowns: the honest difference
Veneers
Thin porcelain or composite facings on the front surface. Minimal reduction, sometimes none. Suited to shape, colour and minor alignment changes on healthy front teeth. Not suitable for teeth with large fillings or heavy damage.
Crowns
A full covering that replaces the outer tooth structure. Requires significant reduction of the natural tooth, which is irreversible. Appropriate for damaged, weakened or root-treated teeth. Not a first choice for healthy teeth that only need a cosmetic change.
What “Turkey Teeth” really refers to
“Turkey Teeth” is a search term, not a treatment. It usually describes crowns placed on healthy teeth, aggressively prepared and often presented as veneers, producing an unnatural look and long-term problems. We do not present crowns as veneers, and the treating clinician will explain why a particular option is proposed for each tooth. Read the safety questions we think every UK patient should ask.
What a seven-night cosmetic trip typically involves
Cosmetic dental trips are planned for seven nights. In general terms: examination and imaging, agreement of the final plan, preparation and impressions or digital scans, a laboratory phase during which you may wear temporaries, try-in, and fitting. The exact sequence depends on the number of teeth and the materials, and is confirmed by the clinician. Seven nights is a planning figure, not a promise that everything can be completed in one visit for every case.
Materials in plain terms
Common options include lithium disilicate (often referred to by the brand name E-max), zirconia, layered porcelain and composite. They differ in translucency, strength and cost. Your quote should name the material for each item, and the clinician should explain the trade-offs for your teeth.
Longevity, maintenance and what can go wrong
Veneers and crowns can last many years with good hygiene and regular reviews, but they are not permanent and may need repair or replacement. Risks include sensitivity, chipping, debonding, gum irritation and, with crowns on previously healthy teeth, the need for root canal treatment later. Ask how repairs would be handled after you return to the UK before you book.
Who a cosmetic trip may not suit
- Active gum disease or untreated decay, which need treating first.
- Heavy grinding or clenching without a management plan.
- Expectations of a specific “look” that would require removing healthy tooth structure the clinician is not willing to remove.
- Anyone who wants to decide on the day of arrival without a plan reviewed beforehand.
Questions to ask
Is this a veneer or a crown, for each tooth?
Ask for a tooth-by-tooth list. Mixed plans are normal; presenting crowns as veneers is not.
How much of my natural tooth will be removed?
The clinician should be able to describe the preparation for veneers versus crowns and why one is proposed.
Could whitening or bonding achieve most of what I want?
Sometimes yes. A good plan starts with the least invasive option.
What is the material and who makes the restorations?
Material and laboratory quality affect appearance and longevity. Both belong in your written plan.
